Letters from Members
Members are invited to air issues, or address
enquiries or comments to SOSTEJE.
Dear President,
Among the more than 39 "Tslot- Bet" synagogues left
behind by departed Ethiopian Beta Israel in Gonder
and its surroundings, only 2 remain witness. These
are still found in Weleka and Ambober respectively.
The Weleka Synagogue is located just 14 minutes out
of Gondar. It is unfenced and unguarded, a clinic
run by Protestants has opened right behind the
Synagogue and tourists are given misleading
information when they ask about the Synagogue. This
historic site urgently needs a strong outer wall and
a permanent guard person.
Twenty Years ago, the Ambober synagogue was the
focal point of Jewish identity in the area. In a
photo taken 2 months ago just after the 5th SOSTEJE
International conference (available from me by
email), one can notice how the center wall dividing
the eastern and southern wings has collapsed. Some 3
weeks letter all four walls have developed larger
cracks and bottom sections have collapsed.
Although the matter directly concerns the Ethiopia
Beta- Israel Memorial Museum and Research Center, it
does not have any funds or budget to carry out the
needed repair work.
I therefore notify all concerned parties to mobilize
efforts to preserve one of the few remaining symbols
of Ethiopian Jewish heritage. I am more than ready
to provide additional details upon request. Please
contact me, or Shlomit Susa at the Israeli Embassy
(embassy@addisababa.mfa.gov.il)
Cordially,
Daniel Workeneh
