Newsletter 2

Dear Members,

I am pleased to inform you of the wide interest in the first newsletter and developments over the past couple of months. It is now time to pursue a membership drive. We have opened an Israeli bank account, which will be more manageable since we are posted in Jerusalem, while retaining Vittorio Morabito as the international treasurer, which may be important when we come to deal with the Sosteje - History.

Membership
1. It has been decided to request dues once every two years, and not annually, as in the past.
2. An effort has been made to keep dues to a minimum, with special consideration for students.
3. The dues are as follows: $40 for 2 years, if paid until 30.5.05 ($20 for students),
$50 for 2 years, if paid after 30.5.05 ($30 for students), or the shekel equivalent.
4. Please send your dues by mail to: Mr. Shimon Solomon (SOSTEJE-Israel Treasurer), c/o Prof. Michael Corinaldi, 36 Keren Hayesod St., Jerusalem 92149, Israel.
5. Please make out your cheques to האגודה למדעי יהדות אתיופיה or transfer money to SOSTEJE c/o Investec, Bank 26, Branch no. 202, swift code no. IGBTILIT ATTN. Jerusalem (jerusalem@investec.co.il)
6. We are aware that bank transfers are costly. However, now that we have decreased the dues, we hope that you will find it possible to send the money.
7. Cash is welcome, but is sent at your own risk.
8. Students will only be accepted if they provide a photocopy of their student card from this year.
9. Please send dues with the filled-out application form, as below.
10. Membership entitles you to the following:
• Membership in an international organization and professional affiliation.
• Free bibliographies from the Paris conference (until 2001) and the Addis conference (until 2004). For copies (one each per member), please write to me at msshalva@mscc.huji.ac.il
• Free entry to the inter-congress in Israel
• Reduced participation fees at the international congress (date and location unknown as yet)
• Forum to exchange professional letters
• Free periodic newsletter

Israel Committee
Unfortunately, the name of our devoted member Dr. Bat-Zion Klorman-Eraqi was omitted from the Israel committee in our last newsletter, and we extend her our apologies.
The Israeli branch of SOSTEJE is now in the process of becoming a non-profit organization (amuta).
Israel Student Inter-Congress
As promised, SOSTEJE will be organizing an inter-congress focusing on student research. The conference committee is under the chairmanship of our student representative, Ms. Simha Getahon. The conference will take place in the first week of May 2005 at Bar-Ilan University. Proceedings will be in Hebrew. All international members are cordially invited.

Publications
Please find a list of publications since the Addis conference.
Kindly send all references for the next newsletter to Lisa Anteby, email - anteby@mmsh.univ-aix.fr
She will send out a periodic list of publications with the newsletters, but it is up to you to inform her of any published work or dissertation.

Letter NO. 1

Dear President,
I would like to assist members at least in my area of specialization and that has to do with personal and geographical names and Amharic terms. As a scientific and research organization, I think SOSTEJE should work according to some strict guidelines. When Ethiopian academics who have completed their high school and also higher education write their names, place names, geographical areas, etc. mostly it is correct (although some names should still be corrected). However, when Ethiopian Jews living in Israel or the Ferenjs write names mistakes sometimes start to show up..
One good solution will be to make a list of all names and refer to it when the need arises. I would gladly assist you in compilation of personal names, geograpical areas, Amharicterms, etc.

Yourssincerely,
Dr. Anbessa Teferi

Dear SOSTEJE participants,
I must apologize deeply for the taxi problem in Addis & of hotel accommodation in Gondar. The inconvenience arose out of a mis-understanding between myself &
clerical staff at Ghion Hotel. Accept my heartfelt apologies.
Cordially

Letter NO. 3. Reply to Mr. Ronald Lipman (query in Newsletter No. 1)
The Jewish Agency for Israel www.jafi.org.il and the American Joint Jewish Distribution Committee www.jdc.org.il were responsible for Aliyah and preparation for Aliyah; the IDF provided the Committee www.jdc.org.il were responsible for Aliyah and preparation for Aliyah; the IDF provided the planes and operational manpower www.idf.il ; the Jewish Agency manned the airport with the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption www.moia.gov.il .

There were absorption centres around Israel at the time which were readied for the arrival of Operation Solomon, I do not know all of them, but examples would be: in Mevasseret Tzion (or Mevasseret Yerushalayim), Ofakim, and other cities across the country, quite widely distributed... Caravan sites were also built in outlying locations, such as Hatzrot Yossef (W. Galilee) and Givat Hamatos (S. Jerusalem, before Gilo) and many of the groups were moved there after a year, although some absorption centres remained operative http://www.jafi.org.il/arts/2001/june/3.htm .

The very operation of bringing so many Ethiopian olim to Israel in this space of time and providing temporary housing was stupendous. Emergency funds were contributed, immigrant allowances were enlarged...

No-one has lived in tents since the early maabarot replaced the tents in the 1960s, but the pre-fab homes were crowded, hot in summer, cold in winter, became unsanitary, and are often too far away for olim to travel for work and education, in terms of time and transport fees. Hebrew classes were also not provided on the outlying sites. http://www.orlandojewishfed.org/content_display.html?articleID=45563
