Doctoral Support for Students of Ethiopian Origin in Israel

SOSTEJE is proud to have initiated and facilitated a move by which the Ministry of Absorption will fund large scholarships for doctoral students studying at Israel’s institutes of higher learning to the tune of $16,000 p.a., which can be renewed for three years. The Center for Absorption in Science at the Ministry of Absorption will grant large scholarships for Israeli students of Ethiopian origin, who wish to research their own community. These grants will be given to Ethiopian students who have an M.A. degree and are either continuing to a PhD. or are involved in research under the supervision of a researcher/lecturer at a recognized university or college. One such grant has already been approved at the Weizman Institute, and others are in the process of approval. For further information, see the attached file – Ministry of Absorption support.

Student Representative
Simha Getahon, a student representative working for a doctorate at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, was appointed a member of the international committee.

Under the auspices of SOSTEJE, she chaired an Israeli committee, which organized the First Student Conference on Ethiopian Jewry, which took place at Bar-Ilan University in July 2005 and
co-sponsored by the Open University, the Association for the Advancement of Education (the Steering Committee for Ethiopian Immigrants in the Educational System) and the NCJW Research Institute for Innovation in Education at the Hebrew University.
See: Invitation (in Hebrew). The conference was opened by the Ambassador of Ethiopia in Israel, Mr. Negash Kebret. One plenary session dealt with an example of doctoral student scholarship and another was given on qualitative and quantitative methodologies; six students reported on their works. It was attended by 300 people, mainly students of Ethiopian origin.
Members of the student committee were: Anita Nudelman, Malka Shabtay, Shlomo Akale, Bat-Zion Eraqi Klorman, Yarden Fanta, Gadi Ben-Ezer.
See: Report (in Hebrew) of the First Student Conference.

Student Stipends
SOSTEJE has provided stipends for selected students of Ethiopian origin to attend its international conferences and report on their work. At Addis Abeba University in October 2004, 10 students of Ethiopian origin presented papers and received travel and limited accommodation grants.

At the Florence conference in October 2007, SOSTEJE provided stipends for six students, Nurit Barkan, Ravit Cohen,Belaynesh Mekonen, Sharon Shalom, Shula Mola and Shimcah Getaun, to present papers at the conference.

Ethiopian Jewish Ph.d.
We are pleased to announce that Yarden Fanta-Vangenstein has completed her doctoral dissertation in education at Tel-Aviv University (see list of publications). Yarden has served as a member of SOSTEJE's Israel audits committee, and attended the SOSTEJE Addis Abeba conference. She may be the first Ethiopian Jewish woman in Israel who has became a Dr. in Education, or the first female graduate altogether.
